Kindergarten to Year 6/7
  • Experiment using The Very Hungry Caterpillar book “ingredients”
  • Lifecycles unit
  • Exploring basic insect anatomy
  • Link to vegetable gardens – what is eating our vegies!
  • Get on the web!  Have your students research topics like Heliothis/Helicoverpa, cotton, metamorphosis, caterpillar anatomy and other related moth topics
  • Keep a Helicoverpa journal!  Draw and describe changes in size, color, movement, etc
  • Study the role that pests and moths play in our ecosystem
  • Create moth art!  Click here for more ideas (can be interchanged with moths!)
Year 8 to 9
  • Entomological studies: sexing of insects, reproduction, lifecycles etc
  • Food webs/chains – cotton case study
  • Integrated pest management
  • Graph larval growth and monitor transition through instars 
  • What crops are attacked/costs/losses to farmers – e.g. Year 9 vegetables unit
  • Pest control - chemicals, predators & parasites, viruses, bacteria etc
  • Rear 2nd generation of insects on crop/vegetable matter to observe damage
  • Technological advances in agriculture – genetic modification with Bt cotton as a case study
Year 10 to 12 Science/Agricultural Science
  • Entomological studies: sexing of insects, insect identification and classification, reproduction, insect collection and mounting for display
  • Integrated pest management (IPM) unit 
  • Extended Experimental Investigations EEI/EAI – e.g. effect of temperature/humidity/day length on larval development
  • Investigate Helicoverpa control methods in grains, pulses, cotton, fruit and vegetable crops
  • Conduct trials using baculovirus (will be able to order from the website soon!) and/or Bt insecticide (Dipel) 
  • Grow crops in pots and place larvae on them to observe damage OR spray with biological/chemical insecticide and conduct a bioassay
